The internet has helped us in so many ways, and now it’s going to help us even more. Often when we use one web application we want something to happen in another, especially in social media. Now you can make sure that specific actions happen all the time, automatically.

if this then that, aka ifttt, is a recently added web service that puts the internet to work for you. By using ifttt, users can create specific actions they want to occur when certain events happen online  – when this happens, do that.

The this part of the application is named the ‘Trigger’ for example, ‘if I tweet on Twitter’. The that part is an ‘Action’, for example ‘send me a text message’. Once these tasks are set up the user can turn them on and off whenever they wish, this webapp saves us all time and effort, which can never be a bad thing!

There are so many possibilities with this webapp –

- if I upload an image via Instagram, save it in my dropbox
- when tomorrows weather forecast is in, send me a text message
- when I tweet, update my status on Facebook

Instagram to Dropbox

Some very useful and inventive combinations for tasks can be found here: http://www.ignitesocialmedia.com/social-networks/ifttt-recipes/

The possibilities for this concept are endless and completely up to the user. Gone are the days of hanging around for one service to add support for another, ifttt is that service.

The benefits of this service are music to social media gurus ears. Now we can update multiple blogs and social media accounts from one platform. Users can view other peoples tasks and find ones that my be very useful to them. And lets not forget, this is all completely free!  So far ifttt supports the majority of main services, for example, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook etc and it’s only a matter of time before more and more are added.
